The history presented in the Charlottesville Albemarle Airport Founders Lounge Map Illustration

Thomas Jefferson was an American statesman, diplomat, lawyer, architect, philosopher, and Founding Father who served as the third president of the United States from 1801 to 1809.

In 1768, Jefferson began constructing his primary residence Monticello (Italian for “Little Mountain”), on a hilltop overlooking his plantation. He spent most of his adult life designing Monticello as an architect. He was quoted as saying, “Architecture is my delight, and putting up, and pulling down, one of my favorite amusements.”

After retiring from public office, Jefferson founded the University of Virginia. Jefferson was a strong disciple of Greek and Roman architectural styles, which he believed to represent American democracy. Each academic unit, called a pavilion, was designed with a two-story temple front, while the library “Rotunda” was modeled on the Roman Pantheon.

Mount Vernon is an American landmark and former plantation of George Washington, the United States’ first President. The estate is on the banks of the Potomac River in Fairfax CountyVirginia, near Alexandria. For the illustration composition, I had to move it’s a location closer to the rest of the landmarks on this illustrated map.

James Madison was an American statesman, diplomat, expansionist, philosopher, and Founding Father who served as the fourth president of the United States from 1809 to 1817. James Madison’s Montpelier, located in Orange County, Virginia, was the Madison family’s plantation house.

I addition to the listed above, you can also find historical places related to Zachary Taylor’s birthplace, James Monroe’s Highland plantation, Theodor Roosevelt’s Pine Knot, Woodrow Wilson’s birthplace, and the library and Herbert Hoover weekend retreat.
